FAQ’s

Why Cables and Not Satellites?
Latency (or “ping time”)
– Satellite between 175 and 750ms between London and New York depending on constellation and orbit height
-Submarine cable between 56 and 70ms for the same route depending on cable chosen
Capacity
-Current satellite capacity is in the region of 0.5 Gigabits/s per link
-Current trans Atlantic cable capacity is in the region of 300 – 500 Terabits/s per cable (about 1 million times greater)
Lifetime
-Satellites need replacing every 5 to 15 years, more frequently for the LEOS
-Submarine cables last between 25 and 40 years
But
-Satellites can get to parts of the world that cables can’t
- Ships at sea
- Natural disaster areas (hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes etc)
- Isolated and remote areas like central Africa, South America and Australia as well as remote islands.
However
Satellites struggle to get to the very far North or South
